How I Updated Galaxy S3 I9300 To Android 4.4.4 KitKat

I own a Galaxy S3 I9300. The smartphone which is still very popular won’t be updated to Android 4.4.4 KitKat officially. Recently, Samsung rolled out Android 4.4.4 KitKat for various Galaxy S3 variant including I9300I and I9305. However, since Galaxy S3 I9300 comes with 1GB RAM and Samsung believe it can’t port Android 4.4.4 KitKat with premium features to I9300, we won’t see an official KitKat update in near future.

One can officially update this phone to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean only. Hence, I surf over internet and find various custom ROM that can help me to update my Galaxy S3 I9300 to latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Since the stock recovery comes with limited features we must first install custom recovery to flash Android 4.4.4 KitKat based AOSP ROM.

Two most popular recovery is ClorkworkMod recovery and TWRP recovery. You can install any of this recovery to flash KitKat ROM. However, you must install latest recovery to enjoy KitKat ROM flashing. In this page, you will learn how to install CWM recovery 6.0.4.7 touch or TWRP 2.8.0.1 on your Galaxy S3 I9300 before flashing KitKat ROM. I personally prefer TWRP recovery due to its easy to use touch interface.

Before proceeding, please make sure your device have at least 50% battery power, otherwise you may brick it.

Step to install CWM recovery 6.0.4.7 touch or TWRP 2.8.0.1 on your Galaxy S3 I9300

1. Download CWM_6.0.4.7_Touch_GT-I9300.tar or openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.1-i9300.tar

2. Download Odin 3.09 and extract it.

3. Now turn off your device and put it to download mode. To do so, press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power button together. Soon you will see a warning message, press Volume Up to enter into download mode.

4. Open Odin3 v3.09.exe file located within extracted folder. Now, connect your phone with computer, wait few minute and soon you will see the Added message at Odin massage box. Leave all other setting and check boxes intact. Click on AP button and locate CWM or TWRP tar.md5 file. Wait few seconds, once added hit start button.

5. The phone will restart and soon you will see a pass message on Odin.

We now have our desired custom recovery installed. Now the next step is, flashing Android 4.4.4 KitKat based custom ROM. I will use CM11 milestone 11 for this guide, you can use any other Android 4.4.4 KitKat based ROM. I have added few custom ROM links in later part of this article.
